Arms of the Empire of Brazil - Lot 624
Arms of the Empire of Brazil LE GUILLOU (Élie) - [DUMONT D'URVILLE] Voyage autour du Monde de L'Astrolabe et de La Zélée, sous les ordres du contre-amiral Dumont d'Urville, pendant les années 1837, 38, 39 et 40 par Élie Le Guillou. Enriched with numerous drawings and scientific notes, arranged by J. Arago. Paris, Berquet et Pétion, 1842. In-8; illustrated with 30 plates (including frontispiece). Contemporary eggplant chagrin, ribbed spine, gilt title and gilt filleting, central gilt arms of the Empire of Brazil (on upper board only) surrounded by a series of triple gilt filleting, cold scroll, double gilt filleting and cold scroll framing the boards, gilt filleting on the edges, inner gilt lace, black spotting on the moiré satin paper endpapers, gilt edges. First edition. Very rare account of Dumont d'Urville's second expedition to Antarctica by the chief surgeon aboard the Zélée. Le Guillou's book shamelessly follows Arago's narrative style, and his lithographs bear a clear resemblance to Arago's own somewhat eccentric illustrations. Provenance: Bound in the arms of Pierre II, Emperor of Brazil (1831-1889).
