[SOUCHU de RENNEFORT (Urbain)] History of the East Indies. Paris, Seneuze ; Hortemels, 1688. In-4. Soiling on a few leaves, scattered foxing in places. Passage of worms at the fold on a few leaves, with slight damage to the text. Contemporary fawn calf, spine ribbed and ornamented, accident to head cover, rubbing, one corner very dull. First edition of this sought-after work. The author, a colonial administrator, was delegated in 1665 by the French East India Company to take possession of the island of Madagascar. He published two successive works on his voyage to the southwestern Indian Ocean. This work deals almost entirely with Madagascar. Provenance: Handwritten mention on the flyleaf: "Philippe-Pierre Durel, lieutenant particulier, assesseur criminel, et premier conseiller aux bailliages et siège présidial de Meaux... en Parlement le 12. May. 1713 - This book acquired in 1704". Handwritten bookplate Durel on title page. Second printed bookplate M. Morin, lawyer in Meaux.
