Cherry morocco - Lot 466
Cherry morocco ORLOFF ( Gregorii Vladimirovitch ORLOV or) Count Voyage dans une partie de la France ou lettres descriptives et historiques adressées à Me la Comtesse Sophie de Strogonoff. Paris, Bossange, 1824. 3 volumes in-8: 2f. 408pp. / 2f. 452pp. / 2f. 468pp. Contemporary long-grained cherry morocco, ornate ribbed spine, fillets, alternating blind roulettes with triple gilt fillet and fillet, blind fleurs-de-lis in spandrels, gilt roulette on edges, double inner gilt roulette, blue silk endpapers, gilt edges. A very fine copy in a contemporary binding. Uncommon. 90 pages of Volume I are devoted to Béarn and all of Volume II to the Pyrenees. This Russian senator (1777-1826) undertook his trip to the Pyrenees in 1822. He wrote perfect French in the purest Restoration style. Beraldi catalogued it definitively as "Dusaulx style". Amaury DUVAL was suspected of being the author of ORLOFF's works. Provenance: Pierre Caillau-Lamicq copy (Paris Drouot sale, 2004).
