PEUE'EI" TOOTH CROWN A woman's necklace or crown made of porpoise teeth mounted on a base of braided coconut fibers and adorned with trade pearls. Mainly made on the island of Ua Pou, peue'ei were distributed to other islands in the archipelago through trade. Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands, Polynesia, Oceania, 19th century. +/- 25 cm. (Old patina with visible chips and wear). Reported by Sergeant Henri JEANPIERRE, Infanterie de Marine, Chef de Poste at Fort de Tahuku (Tahauku) in 1886.
