FRENCH SCHOOL CIRCA 1700 - Lot 14
FRENCH SCHOOL CIRCA 1700 Mural of engravings Pen, Indian ink, watercolor. 33.5 x 45.5 cm. Early 19th century gilded stick. Fine pen strokes imitate the lines of etchings arranged in a jumble, according to a trompe l'oeil convention, while shadows or tears in the leaves are suggested in watercolor. Binoculars and a wax seal on a letter complete this exercise in virtuosity. From left to right and top to bottom, we recognize engravings by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, Adriaen Vanv Ostade, Salvator Rosa, Nicolaes Berchem and Rembrandt.
